ROJO RESIN SP201 Product Information and Directions

ROJO RESIN -Epoxy Resin AB Glue is a clear polymer coating that is often seen on river tables and hand crafts. Each kit contains a bottle of resin and a bottle of hardener, mixed together at a 2 to 1 ratio (by Weight).

This product cures to a clear, glass-like finish that resists scratching and will not distort with age. This product will resist yellowing and is water resistant. However, it provides 100% UV protection.  ROJO RESIN is best used for Art Making and thin casting. When you pour the resin into the mould, we suggest 1-2cm for the first trial. When you have enough experience, you can go up to a maximum of 4 cm at a time.

What You Need:

  • Safety Gloves - Epoxy may cause skin irritation.
  • Drop Cloths - avoid spills on flooring surfaces.
  • Brushes - Foam or nylon brushes which do not lose bristles
  • Clean Stir Sticks.
    • Graduated Mixing Cups - measurement is extremely important.
    • Solvent - Isopropyl alcohol/acetone – no Mineral Spirits.
    • Heat Gun, torch, or Hair Drier – used to sweep across the surface to help remove trapped air bubbles.

    Beginners Notes:

Below are some of the common problems that beginners encounter.

    1. VERY IMPORTANT: To avoid most of these common problems, you should always do a trial run with the product.
    2. Always make sure that your mixing container is clean and your measuring device is accurate. This product requires that you mix at a 2 to 1 ratio by weight. Any variances from this ratio will cause the epoxy to never completely cure.
    3. THOROUGH mixing is the most important part of this procedure. Depending on the quantity being mixed, it can take anywhere from 3 to 7 minutes of continuous mixing without whipping. During mixing the product will turn cloudy white and you must continue to mix until all signs of haziness and white streaks in the mixture have turned back to a completely transparent color.
    1. Do not whip this product while mixing (adds air bubbles).
    1. Always scrape the sides of the mixing container and stick during the mixing process, if any unmixed material remains, it will leave an uncured wet or sticky spot.
    1. NEVER scrape or brush the sides or bottom of the container to remove every last drop. There will always be an unmixed portion which, if applied, will leave a wet or sticky spot.

    Getting Started

    Project Preparation:

FOR BEST RESULTS THE PRODUCT SHOULD BE USED IN CONDITIONS BETWEEN 20° C TO 30° C. MAKE SURE THE PRODUCT HAS ACCLIMATISED TO AT LEAST 20° C, OR MIXING WILL BE VERY DIFFICULT. The room you are working in should be clean, dry and dust free. Dust can cause flaws on the surface of the epoxy as it cures. Ensure your project surface is level. If not then the epoxy will not be even.

    Safety:

Gloves should always be worn when working with epoxy resin. This product is nontoxic and safe for indoor use. Product may be harmful to skin and eyes so proper protection should be worn. Although this product is VOC and BPA free we recommend that your workspace is properly ventilated.

    Surface Preparation:

For most applications the surface should be sanded, cleaned and be dust-free. Any prior finishes need to be completely dry before beginning.

    Using the Product

        1. Coverage:

In order to determine how much to mix you must know your cubic mm (length x width x Thickness). When working on large projects it is not necessary to mix the entire amount all at once due to the difficulty in mixing more than two gallons at one time. Density=1.1g/cm3

Volume=Length cm X Width cm X Depth cm.
    Weight (grams)= Density(1.1) X Volume/.

    Example. 10cm (L) X 10cm (W) X 0.8cm (D) = 80.
    1.1 X 80cm³ = 88grams required

    1. Measuring:

It is essential that the product be weighted accurately and mixed thoroughly. Measure 2 parts RESIN to 1 part HARDENER. Do NOT vary this ratio. We recommend pouring the HARDENER into your mixing container first, followed by the RESIN. This will help the two components mix more thoroughly.

    1. Mixing

The mixing container should be about 30% bigger than the quantity of product you are mixing so that mixing can be accomplished without spillage.

    - Mixing of the product should be done by hand with a clean stir stick. The more product you are mixing, the longer it will take to achieve a complete mixture. Typically epoxy resin takes approx. 5 to 7 minutes of mixing. As you begin to mix, the resins will almost immediately turn a cloudy white color. This represents the two separate components starting to blend.

As you continue to mix the level of whiteness will begin to turn more transparent with the end result being a completely transparent mixture in which you can see to the bottom of the mixing container. Mixing must continue until all signs of cloudiness and hazy lines have completely disappeared. Some air bubbles are normal in the mixture, however do not whip the mixture. Be certain that you scrape the sides of the mixing pot and the stick while you are mixing. After you are confident there are no more thin hazy lines remaining in your mix it is time to pour.

Tip: If you don’t want to take any chances of under-mixing you can wait until the mixing container starts to become slightly warm to the touch which usually assures a long enough mix. However, this also reduces your working time.

    1. Pouring.

WARNING: When pouring the resins onto the surface NEVER scrape or brush out from the container you were just mixing in.

    1. Pouring small hand crafts: the best way to pour into small hand craft mould. We suggest you do it slowly.
    2. Pouring big hand crafts: we suggest try a small part first, and then you can do it again for the main pour. If you have enough experience, you can go straight to the main pour.

          5.Curing:

After applying your product, the product should be kept in as clean and dust-free an environment as possible. At 25° C The product takes approximately 5-7 hours to dry to the touch. However, the product should not be put into any type of use for at least 2-3 days which will allow it to harden fully and achieve sufficient hardness. At temperatures below 25° C, the product will take longer to cure. The first couple of weeks after curing the surface is more prone to scratching, so we recommend the use of coasters and placemats whenever possible. As the product ages its hardness will increase.

           6.Cleaning Finished Surface:

We recommend cleaning with a solution of mild anti-bacterial soap and water. Using harsh kitchen chemicals, not meant for plastics, can cause the epoxy to soften or become tacky.
